Barbara is an artist and papermaker. She is currently working with her husband, Paul Sullivan. The detail above is from a piece called Watching my brothers' poolside stress and strain It’s a collaborative studio sketch of handmade cast papers of abaca and cotton and plywood.
This will be one of 13 (to 15 if time permits) pieces in a show at the Phipps Arts Center in Hudson WI opening October 26 2018 and running through November. The show is titled We like it like that . . . for now to emphasize how our works are built from a reuseable inventory of paper objects that may reappear in many works and sketches.
The work grows out of our handmade papers and our studio experiments. Other elements come in to complement and literally to support the paper such as insulation foam board, plywood and heavy wire. We talk and think about the works in terms of materials, composition, color, installation.
The works evolve, change and grow into a finished piece from there. We want to surprise ourselves, as well as our viewers.
